LAPNARD Country network KENYA – June 2002

Kenya has a total of 581,787 km2 land area out of which 20% is suitable for arable agriculture, in which over 70% of the population lives. The population is estimated at 29 million (1999 census) and growing at a rate of 2,4 % (Nation Development Plan 2002-2008). About 80% of the Kenyan population lives in the rural areas and 75% of the population is engaged in agriculture. Agriculture constitutes over 25% of the GDP directly and 27% indirectly through linkage with manufacturing and service sectors. It also accounts for 60% of the total export earnings. 45% of the government revenue and 75% of the industrial raw materials. It is the main source of income and employment for over 80% of the population especially in rural areas.
